En este post encontraréis un mapa de la investigación en UC Berkeley. El mapa parte de la estructura de colleges y schools para, a partir de ahí, extraer los diferentes departamentos, programas, áreas de investigación, infraestructuras y centros de investigación a los que se puede acceder en UC Berkeley. Creo que puede servir de guía para entender cómo funciona esta universidad y, además, servir de guía para alguien que esté interesado en hacer una estancia en UC Berkeley.
La diversidad organizacional que caracteriza a las universidades norteamericanas se replica a nivel interno en una institución como UC Berkeley. Aunque a primera vista podría parecer que la investigación en UC Berkeley se realiza a través de departamentos, institutos, centros de investigación y museos, la situación es mucho más compleja. UC Berkeley, según cifras del año 2015, cuenta con 1.620 profesores a tiempo completo y 616 profesores a tiempo parcial que organizan su investigación alrededor de más de 170 «academic departments» y 80 «interdisciplinary research units».
La autonomía que tiene el investigador para organizar esta actividad es bastante alta. Un investigador puede formar parte de una estructura grande como podría ser un centro de investigación, al mismo tiempo es miembro de un departamento desde el que puede ejercer la actividad investigadora. También puede organizar pequeñas estructuras llamadas «labs». Estas últimas se forman normalmente alrededor de un profesor de UC Berkeley junto con el grupo de estudiantes de doctorado y postdocs que trabajan con él. Los centros de investigación e institutos los denomina, de manera genérica, «interdisciplinary research units«. Hay más de 100 unidades de este tipo. Sin embargo existe una categoría especial llamada «organized research unit» que está definida en los estatutos de la Universidad de California como «un grupo mutidisciplinar de profesores y estudiantes de una misma universidad o de varias universidades dedicada a la investigación y con instalaciones y personal propio». El objetivo fundamental es promover la multidisciplinariedad, por eso dependen directamente del rectorado a través del Vice Chancellor for Research y es el Chancellor el que nombra al director de la organised research unit en el caso de estar ubicada en una única universidad, o la Presidente si está ubicada en varias universidades. UC Berkeley cuenta con un total de 41 unidades de este tipo.
Además de las organized research units, están las interdisciplinary research units, que son estructuras de investigación en las que participan diferentes colleges y departamentos. Este es el caso, por ejemplo, del Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry, en el que participan 3 colleges, 2 schools y un programa.
Finalmente se añade un tercer grupo denominado «affiliated research units» que está formado por estructuras de investigación ajenas a la universidad en las que participan también los profesores de la universidad.
La universidad está organizada bajo la estructura clásica de «colleges» y «schools», con un total de 14 unidades de este tipo, de las cuales 5 son colleges y 9 schools. Tanto colleges como schools organizan los programas docentes, centrándose las schools principalmente en los programas para graduados y los colleges en los undergrads y los graduados. En temas de investigación la diferencia principal entre las schools y los colleges es que las schools no parecen implicarse como estructura en la investigación colaborativa, más allá de la que los profesores afiliados a la school hacen a título individual. Sin embargo los colleges se organizan en departamentos, sumando un total de 170 departamentos en toda la universidad, desde los cuales los profesores hacen investigación. Además los departamentos acogen algunas infraestructuras de investigación. Los departamentos, los colleges y las schools imparten programas de diferente nivel. En los tres casos existen programas dirigidos a graduados. Los programas que se imparten desde los departamentos son también programas de los colleges, mientras que los que se imparten por las schools son sólo de las schools. Los programas encaminados a la obtención del título de doctor también están vinculados con la actividad investigadora de UC Berkeley Hay que tener también en cuenta que las research units también pueden impartir programas.
Respecto a las instalaciones de investigación, lo que se conocen como «research facilities», algunas están ubicadas y gestionadas por departamentos, pero otras son independientes y están a disposición de toda la comunidad universitaria.
